The Identity Gap
Most habit advice focuses on behaviour. Do this. Track that. Build a streak.
It misses the deeper layer: who you believe yourself to be.
The Athlete Principle
Ask someone who exercises consistently why they do it. They won't say "because of my habit tracker." They'll say some version of: I'm someone who moves their body.
The behaviour flows from the identity. Not the other way around.
How to Shift Identity
Identity shifts come through evidence. Small, consistent actions that prove to yourself you are the person you want to become.
- You don't try to read more you become someone who reads
- You don't try to eat well you become someone who takes their health seriously
- You don't try to be productive you become someone who follows through
The coaching work is in accelerating this identity evolution removing the counterevidence (the exceptions, the excuses) and stacking the proof.
The Coaching Conversation
In my practice, the first sessions are rarely about habits. They're about unpacking the story you're telling about who you are and what you're capable of.
That's where the real work begins.
